Uterine fibroid embolization is a procedure that treats uterine fibroids, which are benign tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus. The exact cause of uterine fibroids is unknown, but it may be related to hormonal factors, genetic factors, or environmental factors. Uterine fibroids can cause symptoms such as heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain or pressure, urinary frequency or urgency, constipation, back or leg pain, and infertility. However, some women with uterine fibroids may have no symptoms at all.
Uterine fibroids are often detected during a pelvic exam or suspected based on symptoms. Surgery can remove the fibroids or the entire uterus, but it may have risks such as infection, bleeding, or damage to nearby organs. Uterine fibroid embolization is a minimally invasive procedure that blocks the blood supply to the fibroids, causing them to shrink and die. It can be an alternative to surgery for women who do not want a hysterectomy, myomectomy, who have large or multiple fibroids, or who have other health problems that make surgery risky.
